My name is Jennifer Nicole, I am an artist from the New York Area. For many years after graduating from Art School, I suppressed my art needs to fulfill my dreams of being a Photo Journalist. A job that I loved but had to leave do to an injury I sustained on the job.
Once my dreams of being a female “Jimmy Olsen” where crushed, I needed to get back to my roots. Something I had been aching to do for years but could not because of the busy demands of my job. I set up a make shift art studio in my husband’s garage. I was now faced with the daunting task, how do I make money with my art?
My husband, being an enormous pack rat, had a stash of aging items in the garage. A collection of old floor boards, furniture, wood, shelves and other neglected items. Instead of just throwing it all out I decided to go “GREEN” with almost each item in the garage. I turned almost everything into art! Little did I know, my business had just been born.
“Art In The Garage” is a green based art business. I make hand painted signs using mostly recycled wood and paint. I also re-purpose abandoned furniture so that it can have a new life. Even the smallest piece item can become art!
Sadly, my studio has never really progressed past being a garage that I work in. I work in a badly ventilated, poorly lit, no running water or heat, Space. In the summer, I sweat my life away. In the winter I freeze what is left. While I try my hardest to keep it clean, it is difficult to work in at times. I do not have the money to spend on myself to make the necessary upgrades that I need. “Times are tough”.
I dream of a studio makeover, like other people dream of winning the lottery. I often catch myself looking online for pictures of “Art Studios”. I walk into thrift stores praying that someone has donated a kitchen island for me to work on. The saddest of all, every year at Christmas time, I hope Santa has left behind a drying rack and easel.
Winning a Studio Makeover would be a dream come true! Thank You for letting me dream out loud.

Jennifer, what a heart warming story. It is good to see people going after their dreams even when times are tough. If you can make it through adversity, just imagine how you will thrive when times get better.
