Fish Publishing is pleased to announce the 16th Fish Short Story Prize. The winning story of the Fish Short Story Prize will be the title story of the Fish Anthology 2009.

The competition is open to writers of any nationality writing in English. There is no restriction on theme or style.

The winner and nine runners up will be published in the 2010 Fish Anthology.

First Prize – €3,000 – (of which €1,000 is for travel expenses to the launch of the Anthology.)

Second Prize – a week at the Anam Cara Writers’ & Artists’ Retreat in West Cork’s Beara Peninsula, with €300 traveling expenses.

Third Prize – €300

All those who are published in the Anthology will receive five complementary copies of the Fish Anthology.

We invite the community whether you are an artist, writer & photographer to enter the annual (Whisper from the Heart Poetry) schools competition and the adult competition offers the same (poetry for the poet); short stories; art for the artist & photography) & now music & songs check out the poem of the month, and join our pen pal club (Pen Friends) by becoming a (Whisper Poetry) club pal member, where you can share your creativity; poems & collection of poetry; short stories; art (for the artist) & photography with a group of members like yourself.

The Smithsonian Photography Initiative (SPI) invites you to contribute images and stories to click! photography changes everything, an online exhibit that explores how photography influences every aspect of our lives.

This month’s focus: Seeing Other Worlds.
In honor of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, submit your photo and story showing how photography influences our ability to see ‘unseen’ or unfamiliar worlds. You can also share your thoughts about photos of the universe from the Chandra X-ray Observatory.
Selected entries will be added to the click! website, which features photos and stories from innovators, writers, and public figures across multiple disciplines.
Entries selected for the click! website will be eligible to receive a copy of the book, At First Sight: Photography and the Smithsonian, an intriguing glimpse into the Smithsonian’s more than seven hundred photographic collections.

Just wanted to let you and your readers know that you are welcome to submit your own photo and story, or write about a Smithsonian photo. We’re thinking broad here–from micro- and macro- photography to how things like MRIs and Google Maps make us more able to see “other worlds.” Hope to see some great contributions!

You will find money for individuals, projects, writers residencies, travel, workshop expenses and more.
The fun part (yech) is writing the grant proposal. Proposals range from short 2-3 page documents to fully developed documents that include project plans, budgets and other assorted details.

Canada Council for the Arts

This is a great place to start your research. The Canada Council for the Arts offers a range of grants for professional Canadian writers, collectives and publishers. There are over a dozen grant categories with deadlines throughout the year. There are also cross-over grants so be sure to check out the other grant categories such as inter-arts, media-arts and visual-arts. Check and see who has won previous awards to get an idea of the types of projects that are funded.

The Writers’ Trust of Canada

This is a non-profit organization that supports and administers over a dozen programs for individual writers and publishers. Here is a sampling of the many awards offered:

McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize
Winner: $10,000; Winning publisher: $2,000
Awarded annually to a new and developing writer of distinction for a short story published in a Canadian literary publication.

The Marian Engel Award
$15,000
The award is presented once a year to a female Canadian writer, not for a single book, but for a body of work and in anticipation of her future contribution to Canadian literature.

Matt Cohen Prize
$20,000
Recognizes a lifetime of distinguished work by a Canadian writer, working in either poetry or prose in either French or English. Valued at $20,000, it is one of the richest literary awards in the country.

The Pearson Writers Trust Non-Fiction Prize
Winner $15,000; Finalists $2,000
This award is for a work of non-fiction that, in the opinion of the judges, shows the highest literary merit.

Canadian Heritage Financial Support Programs
There are a wide range of programs available to not-for-profit organizations, established businesses and municipal/government groups. Programs include money for publishers, magazines, arts groups and aboriginal groups. There is no funding available for individuals.

PROVINCIAL GRANTS AND FUNDS FOR WRITERS

Many of Canada’s Provinces are actively encouraging writers and the literary arts though various funding programs. The challenge is in discovering the right departments to query!

Alberta Foundation for the Arts
Each year, $19 M from lottery revenues is distributed by the AFA to individual artists and arts organizations in the visual, performing and literary arts, and cultural industries. Grants are awarded to individuals and non-profits, businesses.

Grant MacEwen Literary Awards
Grant MacEwan Author’s Award: Annual author’s award of $25,000 will be presented to an Alberta writer.
Grant MacEwan Young Writer’s Scholarship: Scholarships of $2,500 each will be presented to four young Albertans (aged 16-25) for an essay or short story of between 1,000 and 5,000 words in length that meets the same criteria as the Author’s award.

British Columbia Arts Council
Money is available for professional development, literary programs, travel, projects and more for individuals and organizations.
Vancouver Foundation oversees a variety of arts and cultural funding.

Manitoba Arts Council
Provides assistance to professional book and periodical publishers, to writers in a range of genres, and to arts service organizations that contribute to public education about the literary arts. They have a variety of individual, residency, travel and organization grants.

New Brunswick Arts Board
Scholarships, Awards, Foundation prizes.

Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council
Project grants, travel assistance, awards …

Nova Scotia Tourism and Culture
Grants and funding for individuals, groups, non-profits, organizations and businesses. Of interest is their grants to individuals program which supports the creation of new works by professional artists in all disciplines.

Nunavut’s Department of Culture, Language, Elders, and Youth
Grants and funding programs and literary prize.

Ontario Arts Council
Project and operating funds for individuals and organizations.

Toronto Arts Council
Groups supported include: individuals, presenters, festivals, and service organizations.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation
The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Ministry of Culture that receives annually $100 million of government funding generated through Ontario’s charity casino initiative. They’ve got some interesting tools on the website to help you develop a proposal and application. Grants are for organizations only they do not fund individuals.

Saskatchewan Arts Board
Individual Assistance Grant Program grants are available in the literary, media, multidisciplinary, performing or visual arts.

Though the entry fee on this one is high, you do get a subscription (or extension) to Event Magazine.

Deadline: April 15, 2009

Eligibility: International

Entry Fee: $29.95 PER entry (multiple entries are welcome)

Writers are invited to submit manuscripts exploring the creative non-fiction form.

Check your library for back issues of Event with previous winning entries and judges’ comments.

The final judge, John Burns is executive editor of Vancouver magazine.

Previously, he was managing editor and books editor of the Georgia Straight.

He has worked as an editor, reporter, and freelance reviewer and broadcaster

and is currently working on this third book, a novel for teens.

He teaches Writing for Magazines at Capilano and Kwantlen universities.

There will be THREE winners sharing a total of $1,500.

Three winners will each receive $500 plus payment for publication in Event 38/3.

Other manuscripts may also be published.

Enter the Event Non-Fiction Contest 2009

It’s got a crazy name, but is a highly respected contest that has many industry ties, many production successes and ties with the Writer’s Guild of America West and the  Writers Guild of Canada.

Deadline: April 15, 2009

The contest is International in scope and open to anyone 18 years and older.

Prizes:  Second and Third place winners, 10 runners up and finalists receive various packages of scriptwriting and story creation software.

The First Place Winner additionally wins $10,000.

But the best prize of all is that all winners have their scripts read by a variety of industry and literary reps.

We know that this actually happens because winners from previous years have had their scripts produced, have been contacted for a variety of projects and are given representation by agencies that would never have looked at them previous to their win. Of course both $10,000 AND getting your script produced would be nice!

As with most screenwriting competitions there is an entry fee of $50.00 . You may mail in your screenplay or upload a PDF.
