Hello, my name is Dominick Mauro Jr.
I am a professional photographer for over 20 years and i have built a very successful business of photography. I wrote my book on the ..how to…of being successful in photography.
My book is different then the rest of the ..how to..photography books because i dispel all the myths about photography and cut out many years of wandering within the photography realm and get people right to the point of where to make money!
Wedding Photography is where it is at!
I wanted to save people years of wasted time trying to make money in the ..modeling …bands..scenic..etc etc realm. I have went thru all these areas of the so called…fun areas of photography..and found that it does not pay!

I titled my book …WHY BE A STARVING ARTSIT WHEN YOU CAN BE A RICH ONE? -PHOTOGRAPHY-
Amazon.com: Why be a Starving Artist When you can be a Rich One: Dominick Mauro Jr.: Books

  3. dominick says:

Thank you Meanie! It has been a fun project and it is all done to help other up and coming artists become successful too.
I will be speaking in malibu about the entire process of how i created my photography biz may 16 to a meet up group of photographers…should be fun to try to help them all with answering their questions!

  5. Greg Bauder says:

    Hi MELANIE,
My name is Greg Bauder and as you may have gathered from my Star Trek
puns I have a warped sense of humour. This is mainly due to my brain disease
called schizoaffective disorder ( schizophrenia and bipolar ) yet I have a BA
in English Literature from UBC and I’ve had 6 books published. My first novel,
THE TEMPTRESS ARIEL, is about the relationship between two schizophrenics and I am pleased to say it has recently been optioned for a feature film. I have
had poems, stories, plays, non-fiction and book reviews published in many literary and pagan magazines. -Greg Bauder

    • Melanie says:

Greg! And to think I almost dumped your Star Trek puns into the spam box! But I am a Trekkie and couldn’t resist. Glad I decided to PLAY!

Congrats on ALL the books and on the MOVIE option. Looks like you are ONE busy dude.

For those who are curious about Greg’s books (I sure was)
      here is the Amazon link

Thanks for letting me know there was a problem with the links Jamie F … they are now all fixed. Murphy’s law continues to strike at the oddest times.

  17. I love photography, ever since i was little i remember taking my fathers 1993 Canon EOS 500, walking around wanting to take pictures of everything. However at that time we didnt have digital so i wasnt allowed to waste the film. So my parents made sure if i was taking a picture it was worth it. So ever since then i have had that photographers eye. With this book i know i will be able to learn more about photography and the contest that will help me save up money to get better equiptment. thanks for your time

    • Melanie says:

Thanks Chels … are you considering photography as a profession? or as a hobby that gives joy to yourself and family/friends?

      Good luck with the contest.

  21. Chels says:

    Hey Melanie,
Yes I’m considering photography as my career.I would like to sell my work and have others have my work on their walls, something to make them smile, Or make them wonder about life,as I do. I would love this book to study up on and learn how to get my work known. I would love to own my own photography business someday.
    Thank you:)

  22. Hey,
I have always been interested in the art of photography and i have always known that it would be a big part of my life somehow someday. I aspire to be a Fashion photographer so recently i have been doing non paying photo shoots with friends from school for fun and to trying to build my fashion portfolio. I also do hair, make up, adn wardrobe on the models that i shoot. I hope to one day be able show a modeling agency or clothing company my pre-professional portfolio to hopefully land a big ad campaign or to even get a contract. I have not found too many websites about how to photograph a great picture but i do occasionally go to Youtube, watch modeling shows [Americas Next Top Model}, read fashion magazines, and constantly look at google for ideas. Although im only 17 i have already started networking to find new models and jobs all around the U.S., but mainly in Houston, because i feel i have to start young to get above everyone else that i am constantly competing with. I look at photography as fun hobby that im passionate about but i never forget where i want to go with it as a career.

    • Melanie says:

Julian, I am TRULY impressed that someone as young as you are is so dammmmmm smart! First of all kudos for doing the free fashion photos with your friends to build a portfolio. I know a few “photographers” who went to photo school for 4 years before they started building their portfolio! Great start.

You’ve started networking too! I’m amazed.

AND you know exactly where you are headed. I have absolutely no doubts that you will get there fast. Keep up the smart thinking … and keep letting us all know how you are doing!

      Melanie Rockett

PS … one thing you should consider is hooking up with an established fashion photographer … offer your services for free. They’ll just have you doing running around work, but you will learn a lot by just watching how they work with the models, how they position the lights and on and on.

  23. Monique says:

I have had one book published about poetry, unfortunately it didn’t go anywhere. That kind of dampened my spirits about writing for a living.

Now I have decided to take up photography because I am on a disability pension and am hoping to “make the big times” so I can become self sufficient. However I having difficulty finding a starting point. This book would be very beneficial to me.

    • Melanie says:

Hi Monique, Poetry books have to be THE most difficult to sell. Consider submitting your poetry for some of the greeting card companies. Good luck!

  24. gerlie says:

    Hi Melanie,
I hate to describe myself as a Journalism graduate because I am now a practicing lawyer in the Philippines. I love to write and communicate through writing. I console myself every time I write a motion or memoranda because in a way, I communicate a story. But i love to be a full time journalist too but it does not mean i love my current profession less as earn well and do well.
After reading the reason why you came out with the book, Photographer’s Market, I could not help but relate. I realized that in some point of our lives our Art must reconcile with the economic realities, otherwise our drive, our spirit, our passion will die down.
I am happy that you have found the right market for your gift in photography as much as i have found the right venue for my love of writing and communicating.

  25. Jpo says:

I have recently gotten into photgraphy and would love to win thebook to keep me up will the all the techniques and such.

  26. Courtney says:

Wow writing and photography contests fit right in with what I love. Great easy contest.

  27. Steve says:

This book would be incredibly helpful to me.
The information would be very useful for
    me to start using.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  28. Russell says:

I am a beginner but I have found the world of photography a wonderous place to express yourself and explore the world around you.

  29. Elissa Seagraves says:

I’ve started the life of photography and i love it!

  30. Elissa Seagraves says:

I got all my supplies of my first camera and i’ve gotten great pictures!!!

  31. As a fine art portrait and wedding photographer, I am always looking for new books to expand my library. I have been involved in photography since middle school and I can’t imagine doing anything else. Thanks for offering to share a good resource with other people!

    • Melanie says:

Astrid, I have loads of great photo and photo business books to share, you’ll be seeing them on the blog starting next week.

  32. Stephanie says:

Hey, so this isnt a photography competition… im sorry if im being blonde?? There has to be a hitch, why would you pay people to just write stuff in a blog?

    • Melanie says:

      Hi Stephanie,

Websites or magazines run photo competitions in order to generate publicity and get traffic. We are having a Blog Comments contest for the very same reason. Though the proofpositive.com website has been up and running for OVER ten years, we have only recently switched over to a BLOG format. The Blog format gives visitors the opportunity to participate by adding comments and questions.

We are running the Blog Comments contest to showcase the fact that we now HAVE a blog and to invite our new and long term visitors to participate.

There is NO Hitch. We do not “Pay” people to write stuff in our blog. This is a CONTEST. We make a random draw from everyone who has added a comment within the specified contest period.

I’m just getting into photography and can’t read enough about it!

  34. Cari says:

    Melanie,

Do you email the winners which are selected at random or are the winners posted someplace on the blog?

Is Photographer’s Market still a give-away for August? LMK, Thanks!
