I have entered (and won) writing contests. This one does NOT look legitimate! I went to their website and it’s FULL of MISTAKES. These people can’t don’t know how to put a sentence together.
Here are a few things that I saw at a glance on their page.
Addictive Writters invites you to enter into are * “2010 Writing Contests”. *
* ‘our’
* period belongs INSIDE the quotation marks.
Non-Fiction or other wring pros. *
* The correct word is prose. they made this mistake more than once, so it’s obviously not a typo.
Explain, Why your plan will work? *
* This is a grammatical mess!
Participants reserve the right for there * work not to be sold or publish to any third party.
* ‘their’
All signs of a scam contest
Caroline, I am happy you pointed this out. We will remove this contest from out database because there are just TOO MANY warning signs. However … I am going to leave this post up here so that people can learn from this … and see how to figure out if a contest IS or may potentially be a scam.
Even when entering contests the phrase “buyer beware” applies!
In addition to your list … here are several more:
1. The site is a FREE SITE.
2. All the emails are FREE emails (many legit businesses use gmail however, when you put this together with everything else, it adds up).
3. There is no contact information anywhere on the site. No address, no phone number, no nothing. Most legit websites have some contact information listed. Of course it all could be fake, but again … more negative points. (see funny story below).
4. Here’s a BIG ONE and the reason I am taking the contest out of our database: **** This site has no reason to exist other than the contest. This is not a writing club, or organization, this is not a business or writer that is looking for publicity. There is nothing but the contest AND they are offering high monetary value prizes. Let’s get this clear. Free website that offers $2000 prizes? NO WAY.
Hope this helps!
Melanie
