Clashing over the fate of a historic building, Jennifer Aukland and Michael Reynolds are on course to become adversaries. She’s an architect devoted to green building and restoration. He’s a developer hell-bent on ripping down the old hotel she’s racing to save to make way for a new casino.
Chemistry leads to compromise, and for a time, they’re on the same team. Jennifer adds Michael – and marriage – to her safe and steady plan for the future. But when Michael throws caution aside and lands in a life-threatening situation, Jennifer’s world comes crashing down. In her family, she’s learned that recklessness leads to tragedy. She must decide if she can commit her life to someone who takes unnecessary risks with his. Will she take control of her own destiny, even if it means leaving Michael behind? Or will she risk everything for love?
Here’s What Several Reviewers Had To Say:
Jennifer Aukland is spending the final summer before college graduation exploring all the options life has to offer. She never anticipated meeting a man that could create such excitement at the mere sight of him, but Michael Reynolds is showing Jennifer what love feels like. The problem it turns out is he is trying to tear down the historic building she is fighting to restore. While this could have been a relationship deal breaker, Michael peels back the layers of Jennifer’s gift to see what new can be created from the old.
As summer moves along and their feelings for each other blossom in to so much more than a casual relationship Jennifer has to make decisions about where she wants to be and is Michael the one for a life time. What Jennifer does know is her discomfort with the need that Michael has for pushing the envelope for extreme sports. Michael and his brother challenge each other to always take it up a notch and Jennifer saw how that mentality destroyed someone she loved once before.
The love between them blossoms into marriage plans that go along smoothly until Michael decides to take a risk that Jennifer cannot deal with and she walks away. Graduation comes, a full time job shows her creative genius, and time moves along as it always does but Jennifer’s heart never recovered. When business brings them back together the reality of what he almost lost while chasing something he cared so little about make Michael realize all that mattered was Jennifer and the love they shared for one another.
Love is a daily work in progress with ups and downs you have to be prepared to weather and Darlene Deluca writes with clarity how much the heart can handle.

Another great story from author Darlene Deluca. Liked this one very much as it showed the conflict between a young woman forced to decide between a life of predictability without the man who has captured her heart, or one where she accepts a life with someone who challenges her security and risk-taking boundaries, a man who faces life head-on–sometimes to his own detriment. You find yourself in turns frustrated with the characters, then cheering them on–but isn’t that why we love to read romance?

Deluca just keeps getting better. This time she explores how fear can keep a person from maturing, from fully engaging in life, and from developing lasting relationships. Her heroine in “Risk” is younger than those of Deluca’s other books, and the author does a wonderful job of character development. It is fun watching Jen grow from a frightened young woman who refuses to let go of past hurts into a strong, vibrant character ready to face life with a newfound confidence and spirit.
