Have you ever wondered how someone can come from a poverty stricken background to create a life filled with happiness and success?
I love Maddy Malhotra’s story and his books and wanted to share them with you.
Melanie Rockett: Tell us a bit about yourself and your background.
Maddy Malhotra: Growing up in India, I never dreamed of being a coach and helping others get out of their own ‘poverty’ thinking. My world was full of deprivation on all levels and I had no emotional support, praise or positive feedback but plenty of abuse (physical, mental and sexual). I lived in an environment of scarcity thinking and had no idea that abundant thinking even existed! I was at times very depressed and suicidal.
However, from somewhere within, I found a determination to change my lot in life and with $8,000 of borrowed money made my way to the UK to enroll on a diploma course. I spoke little English and knew little about the country I had made my new home, but I was determined to prove my family and teachers wrong and prove to myself that I was a man of worth.
I experienced some pretty awful living environments here in the UK too. I ran out of money more than once, borrowed more money and washed dishes in a local restaurant to put food in my belly while I was studying. But always determined to better myself I stuck with it to reach my goal of getting a good job in the UK. And, after completing my Masters in Computer Science, when I reached that goal (as an IT consultant for British Telecoms), I realised that there was more. More to learn and more to life.
I have trained as an NLP Practitioner, Hypnotherapist and Time Change Therapist . I completed a Diploma in Psychology and in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and studied Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy alongside many personal development workshops. I studied psychotherapy (TA) at the University of Oxford and coaching skills at the University of Cambridge .
I have learned how to change my self beliefs, my thoughts and my self-talk to change that scarcity thinking into abundant thinking. I’ve learnt to be thankful and I’ve learnt how to be happy (with or without money in my pocket).
Now I’d like to share what I’ve learnt with you so that You can be Happy, Fit, Confident and Wealthy.
Melanie Rockett: You are not new to writing, having participated in several research related books as well as your first book Bullet-Proof Belief. Can you tell us how and why you came to write your latest book, How to Build Self-Esteem and Be Confident: Overcome Fears, Break Habits, Be Successful and Happy?
I have participated in research work related to positive psychology and try to learn new techniques/therapies every few months. After the first self-help book I started analysing and narrowing down the common major issues we all have. Then I decided to gain more knowledge on each of those issues and learn to cure them too. Finally I wrote this easy to understand and practical book which anyone can use to improve one or more areas of life.
Melanie Rockett: Many people spend countless hours and dollars on trying to achieve success. Many of them never get near what they dream of, or get there for a short while only to backslide. What makes YOUR book different from the dozens of other self-help books?
Maddy Malhotra: As I said, I have learnt and implemented all of it on myself, friends and clients and then wrote this book. It is full of practical exercises and examples from the lives of the most successful, happy and fulfilled people. It is very easy to understand. I have collected examples from the eastern wisdom and from various religions to support the psychological researches and what they call the new age theory. Also there are practical tips for parents and teachers alongside making relationships better, benefits of gratitude and forgiveness.
Melanie Rockett: You recently released a workbook to go with How to Build Self-Esteem and Be Confident. Can you tell us a bit about the workbook and your home-study program?
Maddy Malhotra: The home-study program comes with audio (mp3) and has many more practical exercises, research references and details about all the major topics covered in the book. I use it with my one-to-one coaching clients too.
Warning: it’s not for those lazy people who don’t resolve problems and just like to complain/blame others and luck/God!
