I am an avid journal writer, and have taken time to write every morning for decades. Friends often tell me that they can never think of anything to write about. When I came across Nicole C. Calhoun’s book, I thought that this would make the perfect gift for would-be journal writers. It gives a kick start to your day and gets you thinking more about the “reflection questions” throughout the day.
I had an opportunity to chat with Nicole to find out more about her life and her book!
Melanie Rockett: Tell us a bit about yourself, what makes you “tick”?
Nicole C. Calhoun: I am a wife and mother of two boys. Yes that means our house is full of testosterone but I like being the “queen” of the house, it has its benefits. In all seriousness, I love to encourage women and help to build their hope. More specifically I enjoy expressing the message of Jesus in ways they can relate and understand. This is why I write. My writing comes from my heart, my love for God and passion for seeing women flourish. This passion also prompted me to found a ministry to women called Restored to Stand.
Melanie Rockett: You are not new to writing, and won a blog writing contest. Can you fill us in on your writing background?
Nicole C. Calhoun: It’s funny that you mention the writing contest. I won that one writing about “potty” training my son which was an adventure in itself. That experience taught me that we can learn lessons in just about anything we deal with in life, even “potty” training.
My other writing has included blogging, a little poetry and a monthly electronic newsletter for four years. So yes, I enjoy writing but it must come from my heart.
Melanie Rockett: Victory’s Road: A Graceful Drive Through Life’s Obstacles, is your first book. What prompted you to write it?
Nicole C. Calhoun: I was once despondent and had lost hope in life and people. Eventually I learned of God’s amazing love for me. I accepted that love and wanted to learn more. I wanted to comprehend the God I believed in so I went on a quest to read the Bible cover to cover. I learned many lessons. These lessons changed me in a profound way. I was renewed and no longer hopeless.
The love of God was not just for me, it is for all and I quickly found the lessons I learned weren’t just for me either. I began sharing them with friends and even people I’d meet and the lessons helped them as well. That’s what prompted me to write Victory’s Road, that and multiple people encouraging me to write it.
Melanie Rockett: Victory’s Road, is set up as 21 lessons. What will readers learn from these? Are the lessons simple “read and contemplate,” or are they more involved?
Nicole C. Calhoun: We face many obstacles in life, that’s a given. However, we don’t need to face them alone and they are not an end all. There is a way to face them without falling apart, which by the way, was my normal way of facing them. Some of life’s challenges help us to grow and become even greater. All of them require for us to lean on God who is faithful and more powerful than us all. It feels good to know problems that we can’t solve, can be solved by Him.
The readers will learn to face their obstacles in life God’s way. They will learn that through Jesus Christ, the road they are traveling leads to Victory, despite their obstacles. Their hope will be reignited and they will learn that nothing is impossible for God.
The book can be read as a daily devotional and is simple to read. There are reflection questions so I encourage the reader to keep a journal. I have found that reflecting on lessons helps to face how we really feel about a subject and helps to prompt change.
Melanie Rockett: You already have a fan club … for your book and on your blog. What’s next? Will we see more books?
Nicole C. Calhoun: My plan is to write more books. I’ve started a couple. One problem I’ve found is finding the time to compete a book project. I have many things in my heart that I want to get “on paper”. Hopefully you will see another book title from me in the next few years.
In the meantime, I will continue to work with Restored to Stand Ministries and I am venturing into more speaking opportunities as well. All of these avenues help me to accomplish my goal and passion of encouraging women through the message of Jesus Christ.
Melanie Rockett: Thanks Nicole, best of success with your Ministries and with your writing.
