I often get asked for advice on the “legal” aspects of photography … from copyright concerns, to model releases and book publishing. Since I am not a lawyer … what I normally do is refer photographers to the BEST book on the subject …
Business and Legal Forms for Photographers by Tad Crawford.
IF you are planning on doing stock photography or want to start any kind of photography business, this book is a MUST.
Tad Crawford has compiled what I consider to be the best collection of forms and checklists ever.
- model releases (long and short)
- wedding and portrait contracts
- Assignment contracts
- Agency contracts
- Image licensing contracts
- book publishing
- collaboration contracts
- copyright permission and assignment contracts
- US copyright application form
- and MORE
- Negotiation checklist
- Assignment estimate forms (wedding, portrait, agency assignments)
- and MORE
Business and Legal Forms for Photographers is well written and easy to understand. In each section the author tells you what to look for in negotiating a contract, what is negotiable and what shouldn’t be. He explains the reasons behind the clauses that are included in each contract so that you fully understand what you are asking for … or potentially giving away.
This is the BEST book on the subject and should be on every photographer’s bookshelf. If you don’t get it, you will likely wish you had!
