About the Author
When Crystal Harrell realized that everything she needed to be successful was already inside of her, she started praying for the wisdom to use the gifts she already possessed. As a high-school senior, Crystal secured over $670,000 in scholarship awards, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholarship and the Army ROTC merit award.
She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 2017, Master of Science in Human Development and Family Studies in 2018, and Master of Public Health in Epidemiology in 2020. She now attends Yale, where she is completing her PhD in Public Health, using her education as a gift to serve others through research and becoming a certified Academic Success Coach. Crystal also serves part-time as a First Lieutenant in the Army Medical Department, securing a leadership position in her current military unit.
Raised in rural Alabama on government assistance, Crystal is the seventh-born child of ten children. After her father died with cancer when she was eleven, her single mother did her best to provide for the family, which was not always easy. However, after years of persistence and dedication, Crystal’s wildest dreams have come true as she beats the odds of being raised in poverty. Now her focus is on reaching back to help others out of the snares of adversity by sharing her story.
Crystal’s ultimate goal is to raise awareness of the potential we all have as human beings and show that it is possible to rise against all odds and live out your wildest dreams. It takes courage to chase after your goals and create a path that is your own, but it’s possible! She sees herself as proof, as her own dreams continue to unfold, and with each step she encourages others to take steps toward their aspirations as well.
