The world it takes place in is kind of different and interesting, but also relatable. Lots of new ideas and creatures and interesting characters. Definitely a fantasy book with the usual magic and fantasy creatures, but also new creatures like “Glabbers,” and these androgynous “Nunts” and evil “Malints”. Pretty cool ideas and creatures, but I don’t want to give too much away.
It plays on the idea of good versus evil, heaven and hell, and it takes place in the afterlife of the characters. And it seems like good and evil are well defined, but it also makes you question which characters or acts are good and which are evil. Definitely some plot twists that keep it interesting, too.
It might not seem like an exciting action story at first when you’re getting introduced to the world, but give it time. It was definitely something different from the usual vampire love stories that are everywhere in young adult fantasy, but it still had all the things I like about fantasy books, and definitely can be enjoyed by boys or girls, which is cool. It has the usual young adult love triangle (kind of), but also weapons and fighting. There’s angel-like creatures, and magic, and evil demon-like characters. There’s just so much in this book.
I’m hoping there’s another one soon. With the way it ended, I definitely need to know what happens next.
Sparo: The Unlucky Ones
As it turns out, heaven exists! But what happens when you’re not “good” enough for heaven, but you’re too “good” for hell?
That’s what Nole, a recently deceased teenage boy, is about to find out. After suffering a violent but quick death, Nole finds out that there is such a thing as heaven. It exists in the beautiful, high-tech City of Sparo. Unfortunately, his actions, or lack thereof, have deemed him unworthy of gaining entrance. However, Nole has been given the opportunity to earn his way into the city by serving as a modern-day Knight of Sparo, fighting evil in the name of the Almighty.
He embarks on a mission with his teammates as they fight – physically, mentally, and emotionally – against the evils of the Old World, man and monster alike. But the line between good and evil is not always clear.
Can he survive long enough to earn passage into the city of Sparo, or will his journey prove too much for him?
This epic adventure is full of monsters, Malints, new friends, familiar foes, and just enough twists and turns to keep you wanting more!
