Like a frail boat, our romance makes its way through the uncertainties of distance and time. I firmly believe that it will never sink, no matter the risks it faces on this ocean of uncertainty. My mind wanders back to Rose and Jack on the Titanic, to what initially looked like an unlikely love. I think of the authenticity and strength of their love, despite the risks on the ship, the darkness on the sea, the cold, the icebergs, and finally, the fatal sinking of their ship as the coast of Halifax was on the horizon. But I sincerely believe that even if our Titanic were to sink, the flame and plank of our mutual love would keep us united and alive until the Carpathia arrives to take us back to dry land. Kainalu.
Surfing the Unknown is the story of a young Vanuatan named Kainalu, who traveled far from home to study in Loonland. At the height of his disappointments and close to abandoning his journey, he finds refuge in the home of an indigenous man. At this point, he is a wreck… Any great human adventure is like a ship sailing on an almost unknown ocean. Hostile circumstances are almost always looming on the horizon, with the potential risk of compromising our dreams, of capsizing our hope-filled craft…
Somewhere between an initiation story and a philosophical tale, this novel narrates a journey full of teachings and wisdom.
