This book had me captivated from the get go. I thought my knowledge of gambling was better than average but the author is streets ahead. The book has clearly been well researched and really brings Las Vegas to life. The biggest compliment I can pay the author is that you’d never be able to guess that this was his first novel. He builds a real sense of mystery and empathy with the movements back and forward from year to year. I for one can’t wait for the sequel.
This is a Las Vegas novel. It is about two people who find themselves in Las Vegas for very different reasons, and embroil themselves in the lights, the life, the ‘reels and wheels’, and each other. Las Vegas is not just a backdrop, it is a living breathing character with its own story.
This story may be fictional but the world that Vig and Gina inhabit is very real; it is the world of fixed fights, poker cheats, bad markers, thrown ballgames, counterfeit money, nazi memorabilia, and an exploding hotel. And that’s just the stuff thats true…
