I have been involved in the television industry over the years and have always been amazed at how few books and movies there are about the industry itself compared to the Medical and Legal themed shows. It always fascinates me to read about the “characters” and behind the scenes just in case I missed something!
Izzy Church is not only IN the film and television industry in varying capacities, but she chose to write an irreverently, funny book about it. I chatted with her about her experiences, motivations and her latest novel.
Melanie Rockett: You have been involved in many different aspects of the film and television industry; tell us a bit about yourself and your background.
Izzy Church: My background in the entertainment industry is a mixture of film studies, writing for film & television, and classical theatre training. Also, I spent time at Dreamworks in the books to film department. In the most recent years however, I’ve been heading up a boutique media development company called, Third Culture Creative. Third Culture Creative develops and produces a film, television and animation content for a diverse audience.
Melanie Rockett: You have a novel being released this year titled, Angry Movie Guy. Can you tell us how you came to write this book?
Izzy Church: I am a movie buff! But let me tell you, when I see a bad movie it sure does put me in a foul mood! Luckily, it also inspires me to write novels, so I guess something good can come out of something bad.
Melanie Rockett: You have already got a number of fabulous reviews, including a prestigious Kirkus Review. Can you tell us the story line for Angry Movie Guy and what has caught the most interest from reviewers?
Izzy Church: Angry Movie Guy is an off-beat romantic comedy novel about Charlie Zimmerman, an awkward film reviewer who turns into a ruthless and sensationalistic film critic to achieve fame and success. When Charlie’s biting reviews and explosive TV fits threaten to destroy the career of Alexa, a fiery indie filmmaker whom Charlie has fallen for, he must re-examine his life.
I believe the reviewers are enjoying the witty dialogue and that it has a great cast of characters. I also incorporate some unusual literary devices for a romantic comedy, which captivated a couple of prestigious book reviewers.
Melanie Rockett: Is the story or any of the characters based on your personal experience?
Izzy Church: Angry Movie Guy is a fictional character however; a few nitty gritty characters that I came across while I was studying in film school inspired me to pick up the pen and begin writing.
Melanie Rockett: I suspect you have one or more other projects on the go, are any of them near completion? When can we look for more?
Izzy Church: I have a children’s book coming out mid-2016 titled, Dr. Pookie: The Case of His Missing Thought, which is the first in a children’s book. People can also check out 3rdculturecreative.com for additional film and television projects on the horizon and sufferclub.com for a fun animation project in the works.
