Jasmine Farrell

Jasmine Farrell is a freelance writer and blogger, who is now debuting her first book, My Quintessence on Amazon. I had the opportunity to talk to her about her writing and her poetry.

INTERVIEW:

Melanie Rockett: Tell me a bit about yourself. In your Amazon bio you say you are a freelance writer and blogger. Is this a hobby or living for you?

Jasmine Farrell: Well, I’m from Brooklyn and I am a believer of saying how you feel, no matter how nasty the truth may be. I love writing, randomly dancing in my house and licorice. For now, being a freelance writer and blogger, are hobbies of mine. However, I hope writing becomes the only career for me!

Melanie Rockett: “My Quintessence” is your first book, AND it is a poetry book. Can you tell us about your poems and how you came to compile them into a book?

Jasmine Farrell: There is no specific theme in ,”My Quintessence“. I first ordered the poems in a way that flows like a conversation. Introducing myself, my loved ones, my trials, triumphs, beliefs and then what I see around me.

Melanie Rockett: I’m curious to know why you chose poetry as a means of expressing yourself? Is this something you learned in school or did you have some other inspiration?

Jasmine Farrell: Poetry is my niche. Transparency leaks out of my pores when I write my poems. Poetry is my voice. I attended Brooklyn New School( Elementary School) which definitely encouraged creative writing and all other forms of art. There were various workshops and afterschool programs that allowed the students to express in any form they wanted to. Poetry was the outlet I chose and it stuck on me like forty-five leeches.

Melanie Rockett: What is “My Quintessence” about? Is it based on a theme, a topic or ….?

Jasmine Farrell: One of the definitions of Quintessence is, one’s core or spirit. I wanted my first book to be about that- my core. What makes me, me. As well as introduce readers to lil ol’ me with all the details in stanzas, metaphors and personification in the world!

“My Quintessence” is like a journey of who I am, things I’ve experienced and people who mean the most to me. In addition, I address foolishness that our society ignores or blatantly indulges in. I wanted to compile the poems that describe me, my passions, trials and triumphs. Each poem is a bit of my heart. I am a guarded one. However, these poems are the closest a person can get to me without licking my heart.

Melanie Rockett: Some writers wait for inspiration, while others work at it as a daily discipline. It is easier to understand novel writing or non-fiction as a discipline — how do YOU go about writing poetry?

Jasmine Farrell: It’s a mixture of things for me, really. I use writing prompts, songs, experience and inspiration. I actually have a daily writing prompt app on my phone to get the juices flowin’ in the morning.

Melanie Rockett: What are your plans for the future? Do you have more poetry books in the works, and/or perhaps other types of books planned?

Jasmine Farrell: Well, I am working on another poetry book right now. I am currently attempting to compile all the poems and order them. I am also working on an audio version of “My Quintessence” however, not all of the poems from “My Quintessence” will be included into the audio version. Hopefully, I will be able to record in August. I recently had to shelf a fantasy novel to focus more on my poetry. Nonetheless, the novel is in the back of my mind.

My Quintessence entices your emotions to nod in agreement that, yes, we’ve all been there. It travels through what an inner voice looks like, while nostalgic imagery reminds us we are not alone. Every piece reaches out and tugs on your heartstrings, without an agenda.
