“This book has helped me get involved at the local level. The quality of the book is very good and I like that. It has little worksheets in there and little quizzes to help me know that I understand this content.” – Amazon Review
Ground Up:
A Regular Person’s Guide to Getting Involved in Politics
Real change doesn’t come from the top down. It starts from the ground up. You will probably have to make adjustments to the formatting.
In Ground Up: A Regular Person’s Guide to Getting Involved in Politics, Jeremy Ickes shows how anyone can step off the sidelines and make a real difference. Tired of feeling disconnected from national politics? This practical handbook gives everyday Americans the tools to get involved right where it matters most — at the local level.
From volunteering on campaigns and speaking up at local hearings, to becoming a Precinct Committee Officer (PCO) and building lasting networks, this book lays out a clear, actionable path to civic engagement.
Inside, you’ll learn how to:
- Understand the basics of local and state government
- Volunteer and gain hands-on political experience
- Become a Precinct Committee Officer (PCO)
- Testify and speak up on issues that matter
- Build lasting networks and partnerships
- Turn frustration into focused, effective action
Jeremy wrote Ground Up because he believes regular people not just career politicians are the real solution. Whether you lean left, right, or somewhere in the middle, this guide helps you find common ground and start making an impact on your own terms. Perfect for anyone who wants to attend council meetings, support causes they care about, or simply understand how power actually works from the ground level.
About the Author
Jeremy Ickes lives in the Pacific Northwest, where he works as a labor foreman with 19 years in commercial construction. By day he leads crews building doing their projects; he has testified at the state capitol or supports local involvement. Tired of disconnected national politics, he wrote Ground Up to show everyday people how to get started—council meetings, volunteering, PCO roles, and more—on their own terms.
Jeremy loves basketball, rally racing (big fan of Travis Pastrana and Subaru’s Rally team), and spending time with his wife, a Russian economist with global travel experience. They have no kids but three German Shepherds keep life adventurous. Follow for more on grassroots action, community builds, and practical civics.
